A picnic is a form of leisure activity. But it is also a communication pattern: People go to a park or a beach, place their picnic blanket on the ground and open the food basket. By doing so they state their claim of privacy in a public space. Just like we individualize the space around us, we develop our own language amongst a certain group, our code. When stepping into the public and having our picnic with the family, we communicate through this code. I visualized the encoded words of the social group situated on the blanket with signs, which are especially designed to mean nothing in particular. This way everyone can choose a sign and attach a meaning to it. In my design I let the signs crawl around on the orange surface and surround the participants like the words in a conversation. The blanket becomes a place of internal communication, a link point between individuals, a "Nexus".
